February in Australia is beautiful. In North America, specifically on the North east coast of US and Canada, folks may have completely different opinions on February - it is the last month of winter and people are looking up to Spring. Whereas in the southern hemisphere, people are basking in the sun. That is exactly what I intended to do on this coastal hike.
Mornington Peninsula National Park is about 100kms from Melbourne and a good getaway for a day trip. I did a ~12km walk on a coastal trail and it was beautiful. I did the trail between London Bridge Lookout and Bridgewater Bay - you can do as long or as short a section you wish depending on the time you have. I loved the Koonya beach section where I was the only one on a long stretch of the beach - I did have the company of deer flies (also called March flies) on the beach (not on the trail away from the beach). The files took a few chunks of my flesh (of course, exaggeration but a couple of bites were painful). I've had to deal with bugs in my North American summer back country hikes as well - once you acknowledge their presence and be prepared for it mentally, one can manage the situation better. You (aka humans) cannot have great weather and have it all for themselves.
Anyways, back to the hike - I've attached a few images from the hike:
Did you notice the flies on the back? |
